Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures that your oven is at the right temperature when you are ready to bake the meatballs.
  2. Prepare the Meatball Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, nutmeg, allspice, salt, and pepper. Mix the ingredients thoroughly with your hands or a sturdy spoon until everything is evenly distributed.
  3. Form the Meatballs: Shape the meat mixture into small, uniform meatballs, each about 1 inch in diameter. You can use your hands or a small scoop to ensure they are even in size, which helps them cook evenly.
  4. Brown the Meatballs: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Once the butter is melted and hot, add the meatballs in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Cook the meatballs until they are browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes per batch. Use tongs to turn them for even browning. Once browned, remove the meatballs from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess fat.
  5. Make the Sauce: In the same skillet, sprinkle the flour over the remaining butter and drippings. Stir continuously to make a roux, cooking for about 1 minute to eliminate the raw flour taste. Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Once the broth is fully incorporated, add the heavy cream and continue to stir until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Combine and Bake: Transfer the browned meatballs to a baking dish. Pour the prepared sauce over the meatballs, ensuring they are fully covered. Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until they are cooked through and the sauce is bubbly and thickened.
  7. Serve: Once the meatballs are done baking, remove them from the oven. Serve hot, garnished with freshly chopped parsley. These Swedish meatballs are delightful on their own, but they also pair beautifully with mashed potatoes or egg noodles for a more substantial meal.
