  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F
  2. Cook the rice. Set aside.
  3. In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add the chopped cabbage. Cook for about 5 minutes until slightly softened. Drain and set aside.
  4. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until translucent.
  5. Add the ground meat to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned.
  6. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked rice, sautéed onions, and browned meat. Mix well.
  7. Add the softened cabbage to the bowl and mix to combine.
  8. Season with salt, pepper, allspice, and thyme. Add molasses or dark syrup and vinegar if using. Mix thoroughly.
  9. Grease a large baking dish with butter or oil.
  10. Transfer the cabbage mixture into the baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  11. Pour the beef or vegetable broth over the mixture to keep it moist during baking.
  12. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes
  13. After 45 mins. , remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes until the top is nicely browned and the casserole is cooked through.
