- Preheat your oven to 350°F
- Cook the rice. Set aside.
- In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add the chopped cabbage. Cook for about 5 minutes until slightly softened. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until translucent.
- Add the ground meat to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked rice, sautéed onions, and browned meat. Mix well.
- Add the softened cabbage to the bowl and mix to combine.
- Season with salt, pepper, allspice, and thyme. Add molasses or dark syrup and vinegar if using. Mix thoroughly.
- Grease a large baking dish with butter or oil.
- Transfer the cabbage mixture into the baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
- Pour the beef or vegetable broth over the mixture to keep it moist during baking.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes
- After 45 mins. , remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes until the top is nicely browned and the casserole is cooked through.
